The Denver Broncos are officially “sellers” at this year’s NFL trade deadline.
The deadline is set for 2 p.m. MT today, and they’re sending Demaryius Thomas away to the Houston Texans about three hours before that deadline hits. That has now become official according to the Broncos:
“Demaryius had an incredible run here and we can’t thank him enough for everything he’s meant to the Broncos,” John Elway said in a release from the team. “He developed into an elite player over the years, establishing himself as one NFL’s most productive, consistent and reliable wide receivers. D.T. was a big part of so many wins and memorable moments as a Bronco. Although it’s tough to end this chapter, we’re excited about the talent we have at the wide receiver position and wish Demaryius all the best with the Texans.”
Earlier in the week, Thomas was rumored to be going to the New England Patriots, but, it looks like the Texans have swooped in and offered the best deal for the nine-year NFL veteran who went to Denver in the first round of the 2010 draft.
Since then, Thomas has been a mostly elite receiver. He’s enjoyed five 1000-yard-plus receiving seasons, as well as 60 receiving touchdowns during his tenure in Denver. This year has been a down season for Thomas, with only 402 receiving yards and three touchdowns at the halfway point of the year.
His tenure in the Mile High City now looks to be over, ushering the time for rookie Courtland Sutton to shine as the big, physical wideout in Denver. Sutton’s shown flashes of brilliance and it will be interesting how much he can improve with the spotlight on him.
This trade comes at a wild time. The Broncos host the Texans this Sunday at 2 p.m. MT at Mile High Stadium, meaning Thomas will be facing Bradley Roby or Chris Harris Jr. in all likelihood.
UPDATE: The Broncos will reportedly receive a fourth-round selection and swap seventh-rounders in the 2019 Draft, per the Houston Chronicle’s John McClain.
