Want a sleeper in this year’s draft? Want a guy that some NFL scouts have literally never heard of? How about a guy who’s never played football in America, let alone the NCAA?
Well, let me introduce you to Moritz Boehringer, German football superstar.
Not only is this Boehringer fella an intriguing prospect; he may be an elite prospect. At 6-foot-4, 225 pounds, he has the body of a tight end, packaged with the athleticism of an elite outside wide receiver. He’s the type of guy that some NFL teams (including the Broncos) have been hoping would stay under the radar. After his pro day yesterday, in which he partnered up with Florida Atlantic University, that will no longer be possible; the floodgates have opened.
Boehringer ran a 4.43 second 40-yard dash on grass — the equivalent of a 4.39 on turf, according to NFL.com — had a vertical jump of 39 inches, a broad jump of 10-foot-11, a short shuttle of 4.10 seconds, a 60-yard shuttle of 11.15 seconds and a three-cone drill of 6.65 seconds. Across the board, those would have ben top-five numbers at the NFL Combine for receivers; that 4.39-second 40 on turf would have been second highest amongst wideouts.
And again … he’s 6-foot-4, 225 pounds.
“I came here today knowing what I needed to do,” Boehringer said on Thursday, via NFL.com. “But I didn’t realize there was going to be so many people watching me.”
Apparently, the Broncos were one of the teams watching most closely. According to Andy Fenelon of NFL.com, the Broncos, along with four other teams, appeared “particularly interested” in the German phenom.
The only issue is that aside from the insane athletic attributes, there’s not much else to go on. While Boehringer may have dominated in the German professional leagues, the level of competition is so low — well below the lowest levels of college programs in America — that the film is all but useless.
Though it is fun to watch …
While I’m sure Boehringer enjoys playing with the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, I’ve got a feeling he’d be more than happy to jump across the pond and join the Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos.
