The Denver Broncos have accomplished an unthinkable feat: being healthier after a game than before it.
The Broncos entered Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals without three starters from the previous week: outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware, right tackle Donald Stephenson and tight end Virgil Green. Despite suffering a few in-game injuries against the Bengals, the Broncos injury report is shorter than it was Sunday morning.
On Monday, a day after the Broncos 29-17 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, head coach Gary Kubiak delivered positive news that both Green and Stephenson have been upgraded to day-to-day. This is a big improvement from just a week ago where neither stepped foot on the practice field the entire week.
“I would call [Stephenson and Green] day-to-day,” Kubiak said. “If anything Virgil might be a step ahead, so we will see.”
While Ware still remains sidelined for about another month, he appears to be the only player that won’t have a chance to suit up for the Broncos game on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Both safety T.J. Ward and left tackle Russell Okung left the game for a short period of time in the second quarter, but both returned to the game with no serious injuries. On Monday Kubiak called both players “fine.”
“T.J. got a stinger in the game. Obviously it was a concern, but it checked out okay. [He] came back. Russell [Okung’s] back was bothering him. [He] missed some time and moved around a little bit, and he felt good enough to come back,” Kubiak said. “So hopefully we are okay with both of them. It looks like that way today.”
Later in the game inside linebacker Brandon Marshall was slow to get up after assisting on a tackle near the sideline. Kubiak said that was due to fatigue, not injury.
“I think [Marshall] was just tired, very worn out. I mean he played 70-plus plays. Our secondary and those two guys — [Marshall] and [inside linebacker] Todd [Davis] are playing a lot of plays. We are unable to rotate much, but [Marshall] and Todd both played very well,” Kubiak said.
Just one week ago the health of the team was very uncertain and the biggest concern at the UCHealth Training Center. Now, besides Ware, the Broncos are nearly as healthy as possible. If Stephenson and Green continue to progress like they have, the Broncos will be healthier in Week 4 than they were in Week 3.
