Denver Broncos back RJ Harvey went off against the Raiders.

It was a somewhat quiet game, but when it was all said and done, Harvey totaled 100 yards from scrimmage. He also scored once and seems to be getting comfortable at just the right time for the Broncos.

Denver Broncos RJ Harvey had a career game vs. Raiders

Harvey set new career-highs for rushing yards (75) and yards from scrimmage (100) in the win over the Raiders on Sunday.

The Broncos came out with a clear game plan to control the clock, and that meant running the ball a lot. Both Harvey and Jaleel McLaughlin ran well, while fullback Adam Prentice had a career game, too.

“Yeah, I thought both backs ran hard, thought the guys up front played well,” Sean Payton said after the 24-17 win. “Thought we blocked the perimeter well. And then, the play actions and some of the spread-out formations were efficient. So, it was a good win.”

Even though he’s just a rookie, RJ Harvey has to fill the shoes of veteran J.K. Dobbins, who was enjoying a career year himself until he was injured a month ago against the same Raiders. Harvey seems to be getting his feet under him and gaining confidence, because he was able to hit plays both inside and outside the tackles this week.

That included a 15-yard run, his longest of the day, and the touchdown carry that pushed the Broncos ahead 21-7 in the third quarter.

“And with RJ, we drafted the runner first, and when you see him, you guys have spent time with him, he’s quiet, but he’s put together. He’s short but he’s put together well,” Payton said of the youngster. “And so, he’s growing up quick because of the injury to J.K. Dobbins.”

That touchdown was Harvey’s ninth of the year, which leads all Broncos. He’s scored five on the ground and four through the air, highlighting his versatility as a playmaker.

“He’s just very multiple,” Broncos quarterback Bo Nix said of Harvey. “He can do so many different things and do them well. So, I thought he ran the ball very hard today. Was hard to tackle. he had a few plays where he sat on his feet after contact and then he always does a good job out of the backfield…But he’s just really starting to get it. He just understands things. He’s not having a whole lot of mental errors. He’s just playing and just doing his job and doing it at a high level.”

Denver had three separate drives of 8-plus minutes for touchdowns. It was the first time they’ve been able to control the ball that well since at least 2000 per the Broncos PR team.

Earlier in the year, the Broncos running game was lacking. Then, Dobbins started getting going and the offense finally had some balance.

With Dobbins going down, some have had doubts that Harvey can carry the load through the playoffs. But, as Nix explained, he’s improving as the season has gone on.
