The Denver Broncos had a historic first half showing on defense, allowing no points and -12 yards of total offense to the Oakland Raiders. For as good as the Broncos defense was in the first half, the offense was equally as bad in the second half, turning over the ball twice and failing to score even a single point. Denver wasted a superb effort by the defense, whose bend but don’t break mentality went for naught as the Broncos fell 15-12 at home and wasted a golden opportunity to take possession of first place in the AFC after Pittsburgh beat Cincinnati earlier in the day.
The loss puts the Broncos not only in a precarious position in the conference, it also opens up the division to the Chiefs, who beat San Diego and hold a better division record and are nipping at Denver’s heels in the AFC West.
Don't look now but @Chiefs have a shot at the AFC West title, with better division record and Denver next two at PIT & v. CIN

With tough games at Pittsburgh and at home against the Bengals in the weeks that follow, things are anything but certain for the Broncos.
The Raiders did their best to keep the door open for Denver during the game, with Jack Del Rio making several questionable calls on the day including going for a two-point conversion when a point after touchdown would have put the Raiders up by four, as well as a passing play on third-and-one within field goal range that resulted in a sack and a punt, but Denver couldn’t capitalize on any of those mistakes. In fact, Denver matched Oakland one-for-one, if not at an even greater clip.
Brock Osweiler was stripped for a safety in the end zone. Emmanuel Sanders muffed a punt. Demaryius Thomas had a fumble. And dropped a key third-down conversion. Vernon Davis dropped a fourth-down conversion. Brandon McManus missed a field goal. And Michael Schofield got no help in blocking Khalil Mack, who had five sacks on the day.
It was a complete and total meltdown for Denver, who led 12-0 at the half.
As always, the team at MHS was all over the action, for better and for worse, offering their input on Twitter. Here’s how we, along with some of our friends in the Denver media, saw Denver’s collapse at the hands of the hated Raiders…
Oakland responded to open the second half…
Raiders go back in the positive after a 30-yard pass to Mychal Rivera … Raiders up to 28 yards for the day, 40 yards on this series.
— Andrew Mason (@MaseDenver) December 13, 2015
#Raiders offense came out with adjustments. Moving the ball down the field after a big play to Cooper. In #Broncos territory.
— Raul Martinez (@RaulNBCBoston) December 13, 2015
Just like that, the #Broncos' amazing, dominant first half is wiped away. 12-7 #Raiders extra point pending.
— MileHighReport (@MileHighReport) December 13, 2015
That TD gives OAK its first points, but maybe more importantly, it gives 'em some confidence that they can now move the ball on this D…
— Les Shapiro (@LesShapiro) December 13, 2015
With a forced fumble, Oakland took full control of the momentum…
And Demaryius Thomas fumbles after getting the first down. #Raiders recover. #Momentum back to Oakland.
— Raul Martinez (@RaulNBCBoston) December 13, 2015
Monster change in momentum. This is why you need touchdowns! This game should have been over at half. Now a TD gives Oakland the lead.
— Rod Mackey (@RodMackeySports) December 13, 2015
With Oakland in field goal range on third-and-one, Shaq Barrett made the play of the day to that point…
HUGE sack for Shaq Barrett … Malik Jackson held, or he could have gotten to Carr, too.
— Andrew Mason (@MaseDenver) December 13, 2015
Shaq Attack! @MOOCHIE048 single handedly took the Raiders out of Field Goal range.
— Arran Andersen (@arranandersen) December 13, 2015
Not really sure what the #Raiders were doing there. Throwing on 3rd and short and Shaquil Barrett @MOOCHIE048 sacks Carr for a HUGE loss.
— Raul Martinez (@RaulNBCBoston) December 13, 2015
But after Denver posted its third consecutive three-and-out of the second half, Broncos fans were getting worried…
I feel like were are on the verge of #Broncos offense getting booed off the field.
— Eric Goodman (@EricGoodman) December 13, 2015
Pressure is on, and Brock appears to be OFF #FlipTheSwitchBigFella
— Gil Whiteley, Now and Then (@Gilfest) December 13, 2015
Booing heard here. Can't tell if it's directed @ Osweiler, @ the play calling or both. Also, starting to hear calls for Peyton next week.
— Les Shapiro (@LesShapiro) December 13, 2015
Then the wheels fall completely off for Brock…
Disaster for the #Broncos. Brock Osweiler has to get rid of it there. Safety. And the #Raiders cut the lead to 3 and get the ball back.
— Raul Martinez (@RaulNBCBoston) December 13, 2015
Sack, fumble, … Osweiler lost the ball have Mack beat Schofield for the 2nd time this quarter — Garcia recovers for the safety.
— Andrew Mason (@MaseDenver) December 13, 2015
He can't do that. . . Emperor Brock is wearing no clothes
— Gil Whiteley, Now and Then (@Gilfest) December 13, 2015
And for Emmanuel Sanders…
Emmanuel Sanders drops the punt … Oakland recovers.
— Andrew Mason (@MaseDenver) December 13, 2015
#Broncos doing everything they can to lose this game
— Arran Andersen (@arranandersen) December 13, 2015
What in the world is up with the #Broncos? Defense and McManus doing their job. Everyone else is awful right now.
— Raul Martinez (@RaulNBCBoston) December 13, 2015
The last time I saw a meltdown like this is when the Wicked Witch of the West got a bucket of water thrown on her. #Broncos
— Eric Goodman (@EricGoodman) December 13, 2015
But Jack Del Rio makes a questionable decision after the Raiders go up by three. He goes for… two?
Carr hits a WIDE OPEN Rivera. Touchdown Raiders. Oakland takes the lead 15-12. Ummm…why did they go for 2? #OAKvsDEN
— cover32 Broncos (@cover32_DEN) December 13, 2015
How dumb are the Raiders? Now a 3-point game. Wow. Just. Plain. Silly.
— Vic Lombardi (@VicLombardi) December 13, 2015
JACK DEL RIO IS SO DUMB 😂😂😔
— Will Petersen (@PetersenWill) December 13, 2015
That is the dumbest coaching decision of the year. Raider math!
— James Merilatt (@jamesmerilatt) December 13, 2015
So Raiders long snapper hurt on the muffed punt by Sanders. Explains 2-pt try.
— Steve Cox (@SteveCoxDenver) December 13, 2015
With a chance to get Denver back in it, McManus misses for the third week in a row…
McManus is NO GOOD from 49 yards … a miss in three consecutive games. Ball bounces off the left upright.
— Andrew Mason (@MaseDenver) December 13, 2015
Clearly McManus wants a QB change as this is the 3rd time he's missed with #Broncos Osweiler as QB. #sarcasm
— Eric Goodman (@EricGoodman) December 13, 2015
The Broncos got the ball back with 2:37 left, no timeouts and a chance to win/tie. But the day ended the way the entire second half had gone…
Sanders with the fair catch at the 8. 2:35, no timeouts, and probably 57 yards to go for a reasonable McManus shot.

2 minute warning. #Broncos down 3 and have a 2nd and 4 from their own 29. How are your nerves #BroncosCountry?
— Raul Martinez (@RaulNBCBoston) December 14, 2015
Mack beats Schofield for another sack.
— Andrew Mason (@MaseDenver) December 14, 2015
These final thoughts just about summarize the feelings in Broncos Country after the final whistle blew…
Injuries aside (because all teams are dealing with them) that was as unprofessional a performance as you will see from Broncos. Miserable.
