Despite Denver recently acquiring quarterback Mark Sanchez, the team still seems to be scrambling for someone a little more solid. Though several names have been tossed around, Colin Kaepernick’s keeps making news, raising the question of: Is he the right guy for the job?
San Francisco Chronicle columnist Ann Killion joined Gil Whiteley this afternoon to analyze this question and discuss the player’s potential.
While many Broncos fans hear Kaepernick’s name in the rumor mill, reflections on his last few seasons as a 49er may make them skeptical. The 28 year old seemed to be one of the most promising quarterbacks in the NFL when he first started his career back in 2012, but when your QBR drops from 75.2 to 47.1, there’s something to be alarmed about.
“He’s not Peyton Manning that’s for sure,” Killion said. “I’m not a big fan of Kaepernick, of his style of play. I just don’t think it’s really sustainable in the NFL to be a mobile quarterback like that.”
Kaepernick’s limited pocket presence, his quickness to become flustered, and his not-so-impressive footwork under pressure has fans wondering the same thing. While there is no doubt that Kaepernick is a naturally gifted athlete, and he’s definitely had some shining moments in his career, he seems to be stuck in a rut.
“I think some of that can be coached out of him,” Killion said. “As far as being a quarterback, he still has a lot to prove.”
But, do the Broncos really want to be the ones to take a chance on Kaepernick? What if the flaws we’ve seen in the last two seasons can’t be “coached out of him”? It seems pretty risky, but maybe an organization with John Elway at the top is the right fit.
