Paul Lukas has long been obsessed with, as his website describes it, “The Obsessive Study of Athletics Aesthetics.” For years, uni-watch.com has provided in-depth coverage of all things uniforms, from the top teams in the NFL all the way down to rookie ball. Heck, Lukas and his crew even chime in via Twitter on beer league softball “uni” matters. In short, there’s no greater authority on sports uniforms.
So, it means something when Lukas calls the Denver Nuggets famous “rainbow skyline” uniforms one of the 10 best in NBA history.
ESPN is doing lots of NBA top-10 lists. My contribution: the top 10 uniforms in NBA history. https://t.co/MzKnN3GNEl

ESPN tasked Lukas with identifying the most-iconic unis to ever hit the hardwood and he determined that Denver’s uniforms from the 1980s rank No. 7 all-time.
About the uniforms, Lukas writes:
“Hey, you know that rule about having to wear a number on the front of the jersey? Nobody said it had to be smack-dab in the center, right? If we made it smaller and moved it up and over to one side, we’d have room for all sorts of cool stuff, like an outline of the Denver skyline. But it needs something more to put it over the top. Hmmm. How about wraparound rainbow striping? Yes!”
The ’80s had a strong presence up and down his top-10 list, with 30 percent of the winners coming from that decade. They were topped only in volume by the 1970s, which boasts four spots on the list. Only one current uniform design made his list, and one of the top current teams in the NBA earned the top spot for their design dating back to the 1960s.
