Zubin Mehenti expects the NFL to input new kickoff rules quicker than previous rule changes.
Speaking with Sean Walsh and Renaud Notaro of Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7, Mehenti brings up previous NFL rulings that have taken some time to change.
“I think if anything were to happen, this would be fast-tracked. It’s hard to really think about how long it took for instant replay and things like that to be accepted,” Zubin said. “Think about how long it took for that to get passed.”
Mehenti explains that because the safety of the players is so important, he expects the NFL to act, and change the kickoff rule quickly.
“I have a feeling that this one, because of all the extra emphasis on safety and the game, and this being deemed by many the most dangerous play in the game, and the punt return being a much more exciting play,” Mehenti said. “Whatever the resolution is, I think that there going to come to it pretty quickly. Because I think they’ve realized that this is one of their major problems right now.”
Mehenti emphasizes that it’s refreshing when the NFL can just focus on football.
“It was funny watching the draft over the last three days,” Mehenti said. “No mention of [Colin] Kaepernick, rule changes, or safety. It was just that kind of three-day bubble where the NFL can just celebrate football.
With the draft behind us, Mehenti explains what could be next.
“Now we’re back to the reality of everything,” Mehenti said. “Whether it’s Kaepernick, safety, or guaranteed contracts. Those things are standing above the rest, and I think for the safety thing, there’s nothing more important than their livelihood.”
Mehenti explains that the rule changes will come sooner rather than later.
“I think it’s going to be done,” Mehenti said. “Whatever it is, it’ll be quick. It won’t be dragged out like all these other changes over the years.”
