Not every pick is going to be a sexy one, and a fullback most certainly isn’t sexy. But in a Gary Kubiak offense, it’s absolutely necessary.
For most of last season, the Broncos only “fullback” was Virgil Green, and we all know that that’s not an ideal fit.
So, with the first pick in the sixth round (176th overall), John Elway went on got his man, Andy Janovich out of Nebraska.
Here’s what you need to know:
He’s not Glenn Gronkowski
Only one fullback was given much of any publicity this offseason, and that’s only because he’s the younger brother of Rob Gronkowski, Glenn Gronkowski.
Unfortunately, the Broncos won’t be adding another Gronk to their lineup. Just a Janovich.
He’s a self-made man
Janovich didn’t receive a single FBS or FCS scholarship offer, but was able to walk onto Nebraska and make the team. It wasn’t until his senior season, though, that he really contributed much of anything to the Cornhuskers.
He’s a two-time state champion wrestler
If there’s one thing you need to know about Janovich, it’s that he loves to be physical. Not only was he a standout running back and linebacker in High School, but he took home two state wrestling titles, too.
He’s not just a blocking fullback
Nowadays, most fullbacks are no more than glorified offensive guards, but that’s to Janovich; he can run the rock.
A running back in high school, Janovich was productive when given opportunities at Nebraska, rushing for 265 yards and three touchdowns on 42 carries during his senior season.
He’ll be a long-time special teams standout
When asked about Janovich on ESPN, analyst Todd McShay said, “I think he’s one of the best special teamers in this draft,” and that’s exactly what he’ll be expected to be with the Denver Broncos. He’s a tireless worker, and if he’s given an opportunity, he’s going to run with it.
