Coach Prime has done it again, as on Tuesday night we learned that the 2021 AAC Freshman of the Year, Alton McCaskill, would be suiting up for the Colorado Buffaloes this season.
McCaskill was a monster for the Houston Cougars in 2021, tallying 18 total touchdowns and over 1,000 scrimmage yards on a mere 210 touches.
He’s a dynamic runner and receiving threat. With his rare blend of patience, vision, contact balance, and short-area quickness, he’s able to slither into the second level of the opposing defense with ease.
His pad height is a concern, but the fact he hasn’t fully polished some of those more technical aspects of running is forgivable, considering we’ve only ever gotten to see him as a true freshman.
Before his 2022 sophomore campaign, McCaskill tore his ACL and missed the entire season as a result.
Fortunately though, for both McCaskill and Buffs Nation, he suffered the injury back in April of 2022, so he will have 17 months of rehabilitation under his belt by the time he takes the field in September against TCU.
The addition of Alton McCaskill is huge for the Colorado Buffaloes, not only because he’s a tremendous talent, but it also serves as a top-tier solution to one of the roster’s few remaining weak points — the running back room.
Dylan Edwards is incredibly exciting, but it’s unfair to expect a true freshman of his stature to be a workhorse back, Kavosiey Smoke hasn’t arrived in Boulder yet, and Anthony Hankerson couldn’t carve out a starring role on the 2022 Buffs. They needed another body, and McCaskill was the best option available by a comfortable margin.
