At the NFL’s annual owner meetings in Boca Raton, Florida, this week, one of the largest topics of conversation remains to be the Denver Broncos quarterback position — nope, apparently Mark Sanchez didn’t quiet the questions.
And why wouldn’t it be? This is an extremely unique situation.
For one, yes, the Broncos are without both of their starting quarterbacks from last season. Obviously, that’s a loss, but that’s only one part of the equation in this very interesting puzzle. The other factor that has to be taken into account is the fact that the Denver Broncos are, as Brandon Marshall reminded us, Super Bowl champions, and they became so without the help of an elite quarterback.
That’s no small factor, either. And undoubtedly, that knowledge is playing an influential role in John Elway‘s handling of the Broncos’ quarterback situation going forward; as our own Casey Light wrote on Tuesday, he has every reason to be patient.
And when asked about the conundrum behind center, Gary Kubiak towed the line, throwing his support behind Mark Sanchez, a guy who could very well be the Broncos’ Week 1 starter.
“One of the things we feel really good about is getting Mark,” Kubiak said. “Mark has 60 starts in this league. He started two AFC Championship Games if I’m right. We feel really good about him—how he fits and what we do. He’s got some background in our offense and our terminology.”
But Sanchez isn’t the only quarterback on the Broncos’ radar, and neither is Colin Kaepernick. As Mile High Sports radio’s Benjamin Allbright reported weeks ago, Robert Griffin III has been a major part of discussions in Denver.
“[Griffin] is one of the free guys out there,” Kubiak said, via ESPN.com. “… He’s obviously been part of the conversation. We’ll see what happens; he’s a talented young man.”
When asked about what Griffin could bring to the table, Kubiak cited his unique athletic ability.
“He’s very athletic, moves around … another player who’s played in some big games,” Kubiak said. “Obviously he hasn’t played much in the last year and a half … but he’s still young, very young kid, all those things he’s got working for him.
“I’m sure he’s looking for the best possible opportunity for himself. Guys like that bounce back, they’ve done good things before, and they expect to do good things again.”
So while the Broncos may be in a holding pattern at the moment, they’re far from done. Whether that means Kaepernick, RGIII or mystery rookie X, there will be another quarterback on the Broncos’ roster come training camp.
