Von Miller is one of the most fun athletes in all of sports. He’s a menace on the field, his sack dances are legendary and there’s nobody who shows up and more “celebrity events” than No. 58.
Since taking home the Lombardi and Super Bowl MVP Trophies last February, Von has been everywhere — Ellen, The All-Star Game, The Oscars, Dancing With The Stars; you name it, and he’s been there. Now, some of the more cranky variety could find fault in this. They could cry out, “Why isn’t he in the gym training? How is dancing on stage going to make him a better football player?”
And to that, any reasonable fan should say, “Shhhhh.”
As Gary Kubiak said at the NFL’s annual Coaches’ Breakfast, he deserves it:
“I’m a little different there. I think they deserve it,” Kubiak said of Von and his teammate’s fun-filled offseasons. “They worked their tail off throughout the course of the season. Our season was very long. Anytime you go that far it obviously gets lengthy. You want guys to enjoy what they did and what took place.
“I’m proud of Von. I’ve said this to you all many times: I know where Von has come from, where he’s been and where he’s been through. We know what type of player he is but he’s become a leader on our team. I think he does a really good job with young players. We all know Von likes to have fun but Von knows when it’s time to go to work, too. I’m proud of him, I hope he’s having a good time out there. We look forward to seeing him.”
The more important question for Kubiak and the Broncos is: When will the offseason end?
Given that Miller has yet to sign his franchise tag, he’s technically not under contract. That means that, like Demaryius Thomas last year, there’s the possibility that Miller could hold out of the Broncos’ offseason program and into training camp.
That’s a future Kubiak doesn’t want to see.
“I sure hope so,” Kubiak said on if he expects Von to participate in the offseason program. “I’ve talked to him a couple of times. He passed through College Station (Texas) for a basketball game one night. I didn’t see him but I know he passed through town. I’ll let him enjoy himself. I hope he’s having a good time.”
And that he is. But he’ll be having an even better time once he signs what could be the largest defensive contract in NFL history.
