The Colorado Rapids will be without goalkeeper John Berner in the event of a goalkeeping emergency.

Berner, who is on loan from the Rapids to their USL affiliate Charlotte Independence, was injured during play and could be out at least another month.

The Independence made this announcement shortly after the incident occurred.

During Charlotte’s May 27 matchup against the Carolina Railhawks of the NASL, Berner ran out of the box and took a knee to his head and suffered the injuries. The Charlotte Observer reports that he suffered a broken cheekbone.

Berner made light of the situation via his Twitter account.

In his seven starts with the Charlotte Independence, Berner has made 16 saves and allowed 10 goals. He also has two shutouts as well.

For now, the Rapids will need their other two goalkeepers, Clint Irwin and Zac MacMath to remain healthy. Irwin has started all season long and has 44 saves on 183 shots on goal.  MacMath is a very capable backup, so the immediate need for Berner’s services is limited; however, injuries and emergencies could change that quickly.
