In a move that was largely expected, the Colorado Rockies announced Saturday that they’ve recalled Chi Chi Gonzalez to start against the Cincinnati Reds.
The start for Gonzalez will be his fourth of the year with the club.
In three previous starts, Gonzalez has registered a 5.14 earned run average. Across each of the nods, he has failed to go more than five innings in a single start.
For his most recent effort, Gonzalez hurled five innings in San Francisco and allowed two earned runs. He also struck out four in the 2-1 loss and allowed a pair of solo home runs. It was the first time he’d allowed a home run in a 2019 start.
In 15 starts with Triple-A Albuquerque, Gonzalez has a 6.10 ERA in 87 innings.
In a corresponding move, the club optioned Jeff Hoffman back to Albuquerque. After originally being called up with Antonio Senzatela’s demotion, the youngster made a single start.
Against the Washington Nationals, Hoffman went five innings and allowed three earned runs, all on a three-run homer by Anthony Rendon. He tallied four walks and strikeouts apiece.
After his lone start, Hoffman was kept in the bullpen for relief help in the wake of the team losing Mike Dunn, Seunghwan Oh and Chris Rusin this year.
Across eight starts in 2019, Hoffman has compiled a 6.57 ERA. In that span, he’s struck out 40 hitters in 38.1 innings and given up eight home runs.
In his career with the Rockies after being acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays, Hoffman has a 6.03 ERA across 45 appearances (31 starts).
