Coming off one of the worst losses in Avalanche history, a 10-1 throttling in Montreal on Saturday night, Colorado showed they’re not giving up on the season yet with a 3-1 win in Toronto.
Mikko Rantanen, Nathan MacKinnon and Blake Comeau each found the back of the net and Colorado battled through six penalty kills – surrendering just one goal – in the win. Both Rantanen and MacKinnon scored on the power play, while Comeau scored from distance on an empty net (and down a skater) to seal the win.
The real hero of the night, though, was Semyon Varlamov who made 51 saves in the win. It was a crucial turnaround from the previous night, in which Varlamov surrendered six goals on 16 shots.
The win concludes and up-and-down road trip in which Colorado went 2-2, but was outscored 17-11. Colorado remains tied for last place in the league with Arizona with 23 points. They return to Pepsi Center for a two-game home stand on Wednesday and Friday.
