The Colorado Avalanche showed some rust on Friday night following a six-day layoff between games, falling at home to Winnipeg. That rust was all but gone by the time the final whistle blew on Saturday night as Colorado defeated Arizona 3-2 on the back of two goals from Matt Duchene.
Eight different Avalanche players tallied points, but the night belonged to Duchene and goaltender Calvin Pickard.
Duchene squared the game in the second period and scored what would prove to be the game-winner, his team best fifth goal on the year, midway through the third period.
Pickard stood tall against a barrage of shots late, ultimately ending the night with 24 saves and taking home third star honors.
Rene Bourque scored his first goal in an Avalanche uniform, a power play goal in the third period, to give Colorado a 2-1 lead at the time.
Colorado faces division rival Nashville at Pepsi Center on Tuesday. The Predators are off to a disappointing 2-5-1 start and sit last in the Central Division.
