The Edmonton Oilers had averaged five goals per game in their previous two contests entering Wednesday night’s tilt with the Avalanche at Pepsi Center. They did one better than that against Colorado thanks to a flurry of third-period goals and another big night by the league’s leading scorer, Connor McDavid.
McDavid had three points in the third period, a goal and two assists, as Edmonton climbed back from a one-goal deficit entering the period to earn the win. He fed Milan Lucic for the equalizer just 32 seconds into the frame, then scored the go-ahead goal six minutes later. The two combined on the power play to assist Leon Draisaitl for the dagger one minute later. Jordan Eberle would add an empty netter to double up the Avs.
Rene Bourque scored twice for Colorado, including the only goal in the second period to give Colorado the advantage after two. The Avs had four power play opportunities in the second period, but failed to convert any of them – Bourque’s second goal came two seconds after Andrej Sekera came back on for hooking.
Colorado has two days off before hosting Vancouver. The Avs and Canucks drop the puck at 8 p.m. on Saturday.
