The Denver Broncos filled a need in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft when they selected 6-foot-6, 250-pound Michigan tight end Jake Butt. Butt tore his ACL in Michigan’s bowl game against Florida State, so his availability to start the season is still up in the air. Reports say he could be ready in September.
Butt is a phenomenal pass-catching tight end. He amassed more than 1,600 yards in his four year career at Michigan, all while catching balls from three different quarterbacks. Not great quarterbacks, mind you. Devin Gardner, Jake Rudock and Wilton Speight were the quarterbacks during Butt’s time at Michigan, and let’s just say that they’re not the most prolific guys.
Butt was named the Big Ten Tight End of the Year in both his junior and senior seasons while at Michigan. In his last season, he won the Mackey award for being the best tight end in college football.
Butt had an interesting storyline during the draft. Before his senior season, he took out an insurance policy that paid out when he wasn’t drafted by the first half of the third round.
Butt will join Virgil Green, Jeff Heuerman and A.J. Derby among other Broncos tight ends.
