With a 4-2 loss to Arizona at Pepsi Center Tuesday night the Colorado Avalanche slipped to 5-7-0 on the season and into a tie with the Coyotes for last place in the Western Conference.
Both teams were coming off 5-1 losses when they met in Denver. Jordan Martinook put Arizona ahead 28 seconds into the game but the Avalanche would answer early in the second period. Rene Bourque tipped in a power play goal less than a minute into the second period and Nathan MacKinnon would put Colorado on top 2-1 five and a half minutes later.
Arizona’s Anthony DeAngelo tied the game with a one-timer, his first NHL goal, later in the second and Max Domi put the Coyotes up for good just over a minute later. Domi tallied three points on the night in the win.
Calvin Pickard took the loss in net. Pickard was named the starter on Monday after relieving Semyon Varlamov on Sunday. Varlamov allowed five goals in two periods, including three in a span of five minutes.
At 10 points through 12 games, Colorado and Arizona now share the bottom of the Western Conference table – the Avs in the Central and the Coyotes in the Pacific. Colorado continues their four-game homestand on Friday when they host Winnipeg. The Avs lost a 1-0 contest with the Jets at Pepsi Center on Oct. 28.
