The reigning ECHL Defenseman of the Year provided the last little bit of offense the Colorado Eagles needed on Tuesday night to punch Colorado’s ticket to their first ever ECHL Western Conference Finals. Register fired a slapshot from between the circles with just over one minute remaining in the game to break a 3-3 tie with the Allen Americans and hand Colorado a 4-2 series victory.
Colorado scored early in the contest as well, when Johnny Lazo found the back of the net just 1:34 into Game 6. Allen goaltender Riley Gill had allowed just one goal in Games 4 and 5 combined. But as the series shifted back to Texas, Colorado’s offense found life again. Shawn St-Amant scored on a rebound around the midway point of the second period to again give Colorado the lead.
Allen had tied things up just 37 seconds after the Lazo goal in the first. It was more of the same in the second, when Gary Steffes beat Kent Simpson five-hole to tie things up. Allen forward Bryan Moore gave the Americans their first lead of the game with 3:28 remaining in the second period. Mason Geertsen wasted no time in the third, however, tallying the equalizer just 35 seconds into the period. Register’s dramatic slapshot gave Colorado the win in dramatic fashion.
Colorado will face the Toledo Walleye in the ECHL Western Conference Finals. Game 1 is at 5:35 p.m. on Friday in Toledo.
