That was fast. The Houston Texans’ marquee free agent signing of the 2016 offseason, the franchise quarterback they coveted, has been shown the door. On Thursday, the Texans sent Osweiler, along with a second-round selection in the 2018 NFL Draft and a 2017 sixth-round pick to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a 2017 fourth-round pick.

The move essentially equates to the Browns buying a second-rounder from the Texans, who were looking to shed Osweiler’s salary; a move that saves them $16 million in cash and $10 million in cap space. The Browns are reportedly not committed to keeping Osweiler. According to NFL Insider Benjamin Allbright, they are already fielding calls.

The cap space freed up by the Texans could theoretically be used to add another quarterback. The team has been connected to Dallas Cowboys veteran Tony Romo. After reportedly planning to release him, the Cowboys are now said to by trying to trade Romo instead.

As for Osweiler, his time in the Lone Star State comes to an end after just a single season. From a Super Bowl champion, to starting on a rising contender, to the Browns, perhaps to unemployed. That’s probably not how the quarterback saw his career trajectory going.
