The Denver Broncos no-doubt need quality quarterback play from Case Keenum this year to be successful. But in today’s NFL, it’s rare to see a quarterback do it alone without a supporting cast he can depend on.
Denver’s offense surrounding Keenum doesn’t need to be great, but they do need to be good. While Denver’s offense doesn’t project to be bottom-five in the NFL by any means, Pro Football Focus ranks teams offensive supporting cast (ranking of all offensive players not including the quarterback) on a ‘tier’ scale from 1 (best) to 4 (worst) and Denver’s supporting cast was ranked in tier four.
Unknown commodities at running back, tight-end and even the offensive line clearly contribute to the idea that the offense around Keenum is at least unproven and unknown over solidified and quality. Denver doesn’t know what they’re getting at three of the four backs on the roster sheet and in three of the first six wide receivers.
It’s unknown if the Broncos truly bettered their offensive line in 2018 with the addition of Jared Veldheer and the movement of Ronald Leary; while also banking on another year of off season improvement from Garett Bolles.
But if they can improve, giving Keenum time will prove valuable. According to Pro Football Focus, Keenum’s passer rating from a clean pocket of 109.5 was sixth best and 22.1 points more than the 87.4 passer rating that Denver quarterbacks posted as an entire group.
