The Colorado Rockies have been one of the best teams in the baseball to start the 2017 campaign. Their 14 wins lead the National League which leaves a stroke of optimism of just how good Colorado could be in 2017.
Collectively, the Rockies are playing well. The pitching has been sturdy, and the bats are just starting to come around, making the Rockies one of the most dangerous and confident teams in the league.
That said, the Rockies should only be getting better as they start to get healthier. As it stands, Colorado is down Jon Gray, David Dahl, Tom Murphy, Chad Qualls and Ian Desmond.
Desmond, the newest Rockie of the bunch, signed a five-year, $70-million-dollar contract in summer with one goal in mind: winning.
“I want to be a part of something — division championship, world championship,” Desmond told Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro during Afternoon Drive on Mile High Sports Radio back in December. “Change the culture here. I was a part of something like that in Washington.”
Fast-forward five months, and despite not having played a game in his new threads, Desmond still rests assure that he believes the Rockies can build something special with this group of ballplayers.
“I’m really grateful for my time in Washington, Texas, but I couldn’t be happier to be here [in Colorado] and be part of this team,” Desmond told reporters Monday following his first live batting practice session since breaking his hand in March. “We are going to do something special, and I can’t wait to get out there and be a part of it.”
When Desmond returns, he will be joining the hottest team in the National League. Winners of four straight, the Rockies are buzzing in the baseball realm.
The return of Desmond will give Colorado’s lineup an addition boost. If the offense continues to produce and the pitching staff continues to hold steady, the Rockies could be well on their way to creating what Desmond had in mind when he signed.
