It may be Vance Joseph‘s first training camp as a head coach, but he’s doing a fine job in the eyes of his players.
Joseph caught the attention of his team on the first day of training camp when he brought to light his short practices, but he continues to win them over with the way he runs his ship.
“He is a player’s coach,” Broncos running back C.J. Anderson said on Friday. “He understands what’s going on. He understands certain parts of things that are going on in practice, what we need to be at the right time. It’s just good to have someone out there like that.”
Joseph built in two veteran rest days, on Thursday and Friday, in which he rested half of the veterans one day, and the other half the next. According to defensive end Derek Wolfe, it’s easy to play for a guy that takes things like that into consideration.
“He understands what we’re going through and he can relate to us,” Wolfe explained on Friday. “Not that [Senior Personnel Advisor and former Head Coach Gary] Kubiak couldn’t. It’s not that Kubiak couldn’t – we won a Super Bowl with Kubiak and he was a player as well. When you have someone that understands who a defensive lineman thinks or how a DB thinks, it’s a little different.”
While Wolfe appreciates that aspect of Joseph as a coach, wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders can’t help but notice the intensity he brings to work every day.
“You hear that voice – that deep voice is already intense,” Sanders said. “I enjoy listening to him in meetings.”
It’s not just the voice that Sanders likes, it’s the mindset that Joseph brings with him as well.
“He talks about championship habits, championship mindsets and what it takes to be champions,” Sanders explained. “He reminds us every day that every single day we have to make an investment to this team and this organization if we want to win a championship. Around here, it’s Super Bowl or bust.”
