One of the big offseason moves the Denver Broncos made was acquiring former division foe Jamaal Charles. The two-time All-Pro running back is getting his first football action in the Mile High City since recovering from knee injuries that cost him most of the past two seasons.
“I feel great. Going out there and practicing and doing the mini drills and individuals. Going through my plays I feel good. I’m excited just to be out here,” Charles told the gathered media members on Friday after the morning practice.
The running back has been going through practices with a knee brace the past few days, and is still getting used to the feeling.
“It’s really my second day with it, I haven’t been doing much in it. I’ve been doing a lot with OTAs, I was here the whole time. It’s really my second day in it so I really have to get used to it,” Charles explained. “If I don’t get used to it, I’ll throw it away. Right now it’s a safe plan for me to build confidence up in my knee.”
When asked about his confidence in cutting at full speed, Charles was open with the media about some levels of uncertainty.
“You can only control what you can control. With me cutting and letting go, if it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen. All I can focus on is trying to go out there and try to not let our guys hit me,” the veteran running back said. “That’s the goal. So when I cut, I’m just letting it go. If it happens, it happens. Only the one above can know when that time comes.”
Charles was always going to have an opportunity to compete for a high number of snaps when he became fully healthy. Now with Devontae Booker missing time, his impact could become even greater.
