Trevor Siemian was named the starting quarterback of the Denver Broncos, but everyone in and around the league understands that it’s a temporary designation. Long term, it’s Paxton Lynch’s job, and Siemian is simply keeping the seat warm.
At least, that’s what it seemed like.
According to ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio, John Elway met one-on-one with Siemian this week to tell him not to look over his shoulder; it’s his job.
“Just go out and play,” Elway told the rookie quarterback, according to the Paolantonio’s source. “Don’t worry about making mistakes. Don’t worry about turnovers. You’re going to make mistakes. But just bounce back.”
Siemian was given the opportunity to compete for the starting job, and after a long offseason, he won. But we’ve now reached the games that count, and with the way the Denver Broncos play football, one misstep could mean a lost game, a lost season.
It’ll be interesting to see how long the Broncos ride the Siemian train if things begin to go south. Then again, though, maybe things don’t go south.
