With the end of the Denver Nuggets’ Summer League campaign, it’s clear that one of the most-talented players on the court was 15th-overall selection Juancho Hernangomez, who showed why so many draft scouts loved his game.
“He was definitely the highlight of Summer League,” Adam Mares said on the Weekend Drive with Sean Walsh on Mile High Sports Radio AM 1340 | FM 104.7.
The 6-foot-9 stretch four may not have received the type of publicity Jamal Murray did upon being drafted by the Nuggets, but he shined just as bright over the last week.
“He has a great all around game,” Mares said. “He has an outside jump shot, he’s got a nice drive and he just crashes offensive boards like nobody I’ve ever seen, at least at his size.”
Unfortunately, Nuggets fans can’t even be sure that Hernangomez will play for the team next year. It all depends on if the Nuggets can open up a spot on their roster. If not, they may stash him in Europe another year until they can find a way to bring him to Denver.
“Right now, they don’t actually have a spot for him to come play,” Mares said, “but I kind of think, after as well as he played, the Nuggets might be a little bit more willing to part ways with a guy like Kenneth Faried and open up a spot for him.”
Whether he comes or not, Hernangomez has proven that he’s an NBA player — possibly a very good NBA player.
“I certainly will love to see him; he’s good enough to play in the NBA,” Mares said. “He would be a rookie and wouldn’t be a standout player next year, but he is good enough right now, so he should be brought along.”
