The Broncos may have had their worst offensive game of the season on Sunday, all while the defense held a high-powered Patriots offense to just 16 points. This was a must-win game for the Broncos to make the playoffs a realistic opportunity, and the offense was only able to produce three points with multiple missed opportunities in the red zone.
The run game started the game with some positive yardage, but in the second half the Broncos play calling seemed to stay away from the run. Newly added Justin Forsett played in his second game with the Broncos, and he seemed to understand why the run wasn’t called much in the second half.
“I think what happened was, we weren’t converting,” Forsett told Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro of Afternoon Drive on Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7. “We weren’t executing on third down which allows us to run more plays and get more runs in. The issue is we need to be able to convert on situational football on third down in the red zone and we’ll get more plays.”
Forsett has played under Gary Kubiak before joining the Broncos. He seems to be disappointed in his production but is familiar with the plays Kubiak calls on offense.
“You want to have more success on the ground than I have been having in these first two games, but it is the offense that I’m used to,” Forsett said. “It’s the same terms, the same plays. We just have to execute better. We have to look at ourselves in the mirror and see what we can do to be better on Sunday.”
Even though the Broncos offense has looked flat most of the season, Forsett feels they are close to breaking things open offensively.
“We are just one play away from breaking this thing open,” Forsett said. “Once we start going in this offense, when it starts raining it pours. We’ll start seeing more runs and more creases and more big plays. I think we’re really close, especially after watching the film on Wednesday.”
