Just a glimpse of Von Miller is a scary sight for NFL quarterbacks, and next season, he has a chance to become even more terrfying. As one of the elite pass rushers in the NFL, Miller is making an internal change to work with a different positional group to become even more deadly in defensive situations.
Karl Mecklenburg knows a thing or two (or seven) about the Denver Broncos’ defense. A Bronco Ring of Fame, Mecklenburg played seven different defensive positions, sometimes all in one game. Mecklenburg spoke with Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro of Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7 on “Afternoon Drive” about Von Miller and his transition to working with the defensive line coaches.
“If you want to coordinate the pass rush, it works better if you’re going over those things with that set of guys,” Mecklenburg said. “I understand why they’re doing it.”
Mecklenburg explained that utilizing the strengths of each individual player is the key to being the most successful. Mecklenburg made the comparison to former Broncos safety T.J. Ward.
“It’s like when T.J. was playing safety for us that first year and they never blitzed him,” Mecklenburg said. “That’s was T.J. Ward does best — blitz. Why wouldn’t you blitz him? Same thing with Von. You don’t want him dropping in coverage. You want him getting after the quarterback.”
