In a Week 9 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, the Denver Broncos defense was flagged for eight penalties – seven of which resulted in first downs and four of which occurred on the final drive that allowed the Colts to ice the clock and prevent Denver an opportunity to win or tie the game.
With the Kansas City Chiefs in town for Week 10, head coach Gary Kubiak wants to see his team maintain an aggressive edge, but clean up the mistakes that contributed in many ways to the Broncos’ first loss on the season.
Defensive end Malik Jackson joined Sports Stampede on Mile High Sports AM 1340 earlier in the week to talk about the loss to the Colts, and the message Kubiak had for his defense as the Chiefs come to town.
“Kubiak addressed [the penalties],” Jackson said, “he doesn’t want to take our physicality away … going out there and being beasts and whoopin’ people. But he did say we gotta calm down and be smarter … you gotta know how to toe the line.”
Jackson also noted that Denver is the most penalized defense in the league right now, something they need to correct without losing the aggressive edge that has made them tops in the league in positive categores.
The Broncos defense, even after surrendering 27 points to the Colts, remains tops in the league in points allowed per game and total yards allowed.
