When the new NFL league year starts on March 14, nearly a third of the league will be looking for an upgrade at quarterback, and one of them will be the Denver Broncos.
The Minnesota Vikings, who according to reports, will not be franchise tagging Case Keenum, will be another.
And they’re both after Kirk Cousins.
In the event that the Broncos do not land Cousins, who will be ‘Plan B’ for Denver? Will Keenum be considered? Will he be available?
In an interview with Gil Whiteley and Mark Jackson of Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7, former Rocky Mountain News writer and current writer at the St. Paul Pioneer Press Chris Tomasson says that if the Broncos were picking from Minnesota’s crop of quarterbacks, it should be Keenum over Teddy Bridgewater and Sam Bradford — the latter two are also expected to hit free agency in a couple of weeks.
“I would have to go with Case Keenum, because he’s the guy who did it last year,” Tomasson said. “He’s proven, but we’ll have to see what he wants in free agency… Assuming they don’t franchise him, he’ll test the open market.”
Tomasson talked about the blurry line for the Vikings between saving money and going with Keenum, or simply spending more and going after Kirk Cousins, particularly if a team in free agency throws out a contract worth more than $20 million per year for Keenum.
“If a team is going to throw out $20-plus million, that might be too rich for the Vikings,” Tomasson said. “I don’t know if Keenum is the guy at $20 million. If that’s what he wants, I’d say pay a little more and go after Kirk Cousins.”
“I think if you can get Keenum for as much as $17 million, yeah, maybe you pull the trigger, but if he’s going after $20 million, I don’t think that’s a good fit.”
