Colorado Rockies’ starting pitcher German Marquez was dominant on the mound versus the San Diego Padres Sunday at Petco Park en route to an 8-3 victory.

Ahead are takeaways from the victory.

Rockies’ roll in the sixth

The Rockies had one of their best offensive innings in recent memory during the sixth frame of Sunday’s matchup with the Padres.

Colorado entered the inning having scored no runs while producing just one hit through the first five innings of play.

However, the Rockies fortunes turned in the sixth inning which started with a single from Charlie Blackmon. From there, veteran Yonder Alonso crushed his third home run in a Rockies’ uniform, a game-tying, two-run blast.

With the bases clear, the Rockies started another rally with Ryan McMahon hitting a ground-rule double. Ian Desmond then provided the Rockies with a lead by scoring McMahon with a single to right field.

Tony Wolters and Garrett Hampson were both unable to continue the rally, but German Marquez put a cherry on top by smacking his 11th RBI of the season to push the Rockies ahead 4-2.  All in all, the Rockies collected four runs on six hits in the sixth inning.

The four runs scored represented the first frame of four-or-more runs for the Rockies at San Diego since June 3, 2017.

Additionally, the six hits are the most hits the Rockies have logged in a single inning at Petco since September 4, 2012. Overall, it was the eighth time the Rockies have recorded six-or-more hits in a single inning all-time in San Diego.

Marquez deals 

German Marquez has been a mixed bag since the All-Star break for the Rockies, but he put forth a solid start versus San Diego Sunday afternoon.

The Padres collected a hit and worked a walk in the first inning, but Marquez did not allow a run in the frame. Marquez’ walk to Manny Machado was his first in his last 22 innings pitched. The streak is good for the third-longest in franchise history. The walk was the first free pass Marquez has issued since July 21.

The Padres managed to score the first run of the game in the second inning where Francisco Mejia smacked a solo home run to center field.

Josh Naylor hit a solo shot of his own in the third inning to establish a 2-0 lead for the Padres.

Besides the two solo home runs, Marquez was sharp on the mound, allowing just one additional hit through the first five innings.

Marquez managed to help his own cause in the top of the sixth inning where he hit a single to drive home a run, extending the Rockies’ lead to 4-2. Before the hit, Marquez was hitless at Petco Park.

Marquez departed after eight innings, allowing three runs on five hits.

Alonso continues to make an impact

Veteran first baseman Yonder Alonso was starting for the Rockies in their series finale versus the Padres.

Alonso signed a minor league deal with the Rockies after he was released by the Chicago White Sox mid-season. Alonso hit just .178/.275/.301 in over 250 plate appearances for the White Sox this season, but the Rockies opted to roll with Alonso as the backup to Daniel Murphy after Mark Reynolds failed to produce consistently.

The 32-year-old entered Sunday’s affair hitting .333/.419/.667 in 27 at-bats with the Rockies, including a grand slam in Saturday’s game.

Alonso followed up Saturday’s bomb by crushing another critical home run – a two-run shot in the sixth inning that tied the game at two runs apiece.

The longball happened to be the 100th of his career.
