Melvin Gordon DUI charge dismissed. Won’t serve suspension

The Denver Broncos had some positive news break their way on Wednesday, as Melvin Gordon’s DUI charges were dismissed by Judge, Olympia Fay of Denver County according to 9News’ Mike Klis and ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

That’s massive news for both the Broncos and Gordon. The dismissal of his DUI charges will mean that Gordon will not have to suffer the three-game suspension he staring down the barrel of. It also means the Broncos won’t be able to void his guaranteed salary of $4.5 million for the 2021 season.

Although Gordon will not be suspended or have $4.5 million in guarantees potentially voided as a result of the DUI, he didn’t get off scot-free. He will have to pay $479 dollars between the reckless driving fine (for speeding) and court fees, and would have had to serve 12 hours of community service if he hadn’t already served that time ahead of the deposition.

A drop in the bucket comparatively speaking.

According to Deputy District Attorney, Mary Krefnzen, her office dismissed the DUI charges due to an issue with how the police officers conducted their traffic stop.

“Based on issues with the stop in this case that would have led to some likely suppression (of evidence) issues the People cannot prove a … driving under the influence case beyond a reasonable doubt,” Krefnzen said per Klis.

That should be the end of Gordon’s punishments, but Roger Goodell and the NFL’s league office could still hand down penalties if they so desire. While some evidence was suppressed in a court of law due to how it was gathered, the NFL doesn’t necessarily have to play by those rules.

However, Gordon’s attorney, Eric Nesbitt feels confident no other punishments will be handed down.

“We don’t think the league should impose any sanctions or discipline based on a reckless driving charge,” Nesbitt said. “As you know the commissioner has a great deal of discretion under the collective bargaining agreement, but we feel confident with today’s results there should not be any discipline imposed. We’ve confirmed with the NFLPA on that and feel pretty good about it.”
