With the 14th pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, the Denver Nuggets selected Michael Porter Jr. of University of Missouri.
Coming out of high school, Porter was considered a consensus No. 1 but was sidelined for most of the season due to a back injury that he suffered in the first two minutes of his college basketball season.
Speaking to Eric Goodman of Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7, Porter says that the Nuggets drafting him at No. 14 was a steal.
“I think at fourteen,” Porter continued. “Drafting me was a steal.”
Porter has been considered one of the most talented players in this draft class, if not the most talented. If not for his back injury, Porter may have been the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft.
“A few teams at the very top got scared which is understandable,” said Porter. “I understood it, but at the same time I did not know I was making it to fourteen, but I am happy to be here.”
Porter has received pro comparisons from Kevin Durant to Giannis Antetokounmpo. If Porter were to reach the level that those two play at, Porter could be a potential franchise-changing selection for the Nuggets.
“It is not a bad thing being compared to Kevin Durant,” Porter continued. “I do not get mad when they compare me to KD, but at the same time, I am my own player. I bring some different things to the floor then he does. He has his own game, his own flare.”
Porter hopes that someday he will have a lasting legacy in the NBA.
“I cannot skip steps to be that great,” Porter said. “But eventually, I want to be better than [Kevin Durant.]”
