The Colorado Rockies are currently in first place in the NL West, and are concluding a nine-game road trip in Los Angeles Wednesday tonight. MLB Network’s Kevin Millar joined Nate Lundy and Shawn Drotar on Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7 and shared his thoughts on the division’s surprise leader.
“I do love this team and this organization,” Millar said. “I love their staff. They’ll put this thing together and keep moving in the right direction. I think they’re a good team.”
Millar discussed the landscape of the NL West, and indicated that the Rockies, who are among the league’s worst hitting teams, have little to be ashamed of.
“I think the division has problems,” said Millar. “We see Arizona having problems, the Dodgers started off having problems, I think this is parity. The Giants are better than people thought. I look at it this way. [The Rockies] are in first place. This is what you want. I look at it as a positive. I think the purple and black is fun; just kind of keep moving forward and keep getting better.”
Currently viewed — somewhat unfairly — as the Rockies’ biggest concern, Ian Desmond is currently hitting only .180, and hasn’t looked the part of a $70 million player.
“This game is tough and I think at the end of the day, it teaches you how to fail,” said Millar. “If you get up 500 times a year, you’re going to get out 350 times. So it’s how you handle those failures. You will struggle for months and months in this game — throughout the six-month [season].”
Millar had some friendly advice for Desmond, however.
“Let’s just make adjustments. What’s bothering you? Are you swinging at bad pitches? Is the bat too big? At the end of the day, you’ve got to believe in yourself and somehow just understand that you are a great player. But you need some results to get that ‘swag’ going. This game is all about adjustments.”
