“Wow! Come on, ya’ll. Russell Wilson. Holy Sh*t!”
Russell Wilson is officially a Denver Bronco, and new head coach Nathaniel Hackett couldn’t be more excited.
Wilson had his introductory press conference as a Bronco Wednesday afternoon. Hackett used his opening words as an opportunity to let Broncos Country know how excited he is about the team’s latest addition.
“I look at it as—somebody asked me when we were at the Combine what you look for in a quarterback. I said, ‘Tough, smart, accurate, athletic.’ Go into the dictionary, and you’ll see Russell Wilson there smiling with his big ole smile. That’s who he is.”
Hackett, who spent the last three seasons of his career working alongside four-time MVP winner Aaron Rodgers before joining the Broncos, spoke highly of Wilson and his family.
“[I’m] not going to lie, I was very excited to meet his wife, probably more excited not going to lie—and the family. Just as a man and as a father, he’s an amazing person. I’m truly honored.”
Hackett got the honor of directly introducing Wilson to the Denver media for the first time. Hackett was asked how his coaching style and Wilson’s playing style would mesh together when the conference became open for questions. He made it clear that it was all about his new quarterback.
“First and foremost, every single thing in this game is based on how the quarterback plays. So I think, when we get that opportunity to be able to sit down and talk and kind of start building this thing, it’s about what [QB] Russell [Wilson] does well.”
While this season will be the first time Wilson and Hackett will be playing from the same side, both guys have plenty of previous experience facing off against one another. As a head coach, working with an elite quarterback is a dream.
“It makes me excited. It makes the players excited. This is unbelievable. Yeah, it’s true excitement to be able to work with a guy like this, a guy that has won a Super Bowl, a guy that has been so unbelievably successful. The idea now is just make it even better.”
Hackett’s enthusiasm is infectious, and it’s clear he’s got one goal in mind for the team that hasn’t been to the playoffs since their 2016 Super Bowl win.
“In the end, it’s about competing at the highest level at all times. We want to win just like [QB] Russell [Wilson] said. That’s what we’re here for, is to win as many games as we possibly can.”
