Retired Colts punter Pat McAfee didn’t just break the news that the Broncos have hired Colts special teams coordinator Tom McMahon to fill that same role in Denver — he did it with glowing praise for his former coach.
“Congrats to the @Broncos on signing Tom McMahon as their new Special Teams coordinator,” McAfee wrote on Twitter. “Guy is an absolutely incredible coach. Genuinely loved going to practice w/ him holding the whistle. Made me fall in love w/ the process again. Denver will love him.”
The team has not officially announced the hire, although other reports have confirmed it.

In 2016, McMahon helped McAfee earn his second career Pro Bowl selection after leading the league in punting average (49.3) and ranking third in net punting average (42.7). McAfee’s punting average set a new Colts single-season record.
Under McMahon’s leadership, kicker Adam Vinatieri set a NFL record for consecutive field goals made (44) between 2015 and 2016
In 2015, McMahon guided a special teams unit that set an NFL record by allowing just 156 kickoff return yards, as the Colts ranked third in the NFL in opponent kickoff return average (19.5). Indianapolis also set the highest touchback percentage (87.0) since the modern Super Bowl era in 1970.
In 2014, both McAfee and Vinatieri were named to the Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro teams.
McMahon spent five seasons as the special teams coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts (2013-17). He holds 11 previous years of NFL coaching experience and spent 2012 as the special teams coach with the Kansas City Chiefs. He has coached with the Rams, Falcons, University of Louisville, Utah State University and Carroll College.
McMahon will replace Brock Olivo, who was fired after one season as special teams coordinator in Denver.
