DENVER – George Washington High School might be home to the King of Park Hill, but Patrick Surtain II is intercepting some of that Chauncey Billups’ goodwill. At least for today.

The Denver Broncos cornerback was a welcome guest in the halls of GW as the school officially opened the Pat Surtain Inspiration Room, a STEAM room meant to benefit students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math.

“It was meaningful for me to be able give back in a meaningful way,” Surtain said. “The room turned out better than I expected.”

And it’s going to a good cause. The Patriots won the Class 5A speech and debate state championship in 2024 and 2023, but until now the team has been practicing in the hallways of GW.

Now they have a dedicated space that is shared with the yearbook staff and student media outlets – including a podcast area which brought a smile to Surtain’s face.

The goal for Surtain for and his foundation was providing a space for inspiration not just for the kids who need it today, but those who will need it and can utilize it down the line.

“It was something that I had envisioned since Day 1,” Surtain said. “This space and these classrooms are space not just for y’all, but for future students at George Washington to use it. I want to thank my foundation team, my family and friends.”

As the Broncos hope to keep Surtain around for the long-term, he understands the value of giving back to the community that shows up every home game to cheer on the Broncos.

The organization has a long history of community service and he’s honored to follow in the footsteps of great Broncos players who came before him.

“I see how much the Denver community means to the Broncos,” Surtain said. “Having inspiration from guys like Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson and those guys that have paved the way early on and learning from them, and to see how much the Denver community means [to them], it’s very inspiring.”

Starting Wednesday, Surtain and the rest of the Broncos will start punching the clock as they prepare for their Week 1 showdown with the Seattle Seahawks.

It’s officially football season for all of Colorado’s teams and Surtain knows that even trickles down to high school level where the very Patriots that welcomed him into the building are aiming to have another successful season. And he may have to check it out with his own eyes at some point.

“I’ve heard they have a game this upcoming Thursday,” Surtain said. “Hopefully I can make it and check the boys out.”
