Paxton Lynch’s night started off with a bang. On his first attempt of the game, Lynch connected with Jordan Taylor on a short comeback route, and Sunshine did the rest, taking the ball 57 yards to the house.
Wowwwwwwwwww.
Lynch. Taylor.
FIFTY-SEVEN yard @Broncos TD. 👏 #DENvsAZ https://t.co/xMVtpIT04j— NFL (@NFL) September 2, 2016
For the rest of the half, though, it was a mixed bag for Lynch, as he went 5-11 for 50 yards to finish the first two quarters. But it’s hard to blame him. While he missed a few throws high, he had nearly zero protection all night.
The Broncos may have upgraded their starting line this offseason, but their depth may be worse than ever.
Lynch hasn’t had an ounce of protection tonight …

As deep as #Broncos are on defense, they are similarly thin on Oline.. Second string group not draping itself in glory tonight
— Troy Renck (@TroyRenck) September 2, 2016
@PaxtonLynch Has been nothing to write home about tonite. . . Protection has been horrible, but I'd like to see him make something happen.

Paxton Lynch's jersey tells the whole tale. Looks like someone used him to make the field green.

In the third quarter, though, things got rolling.
Lynch continued to take hits, but he dealt them, too, launching bullets through the defense’s secondary. And it all started with this 20-yard pass to tight end John Phillips.
About that @PaxtonLynch arm strength…
OKAY, rook! 😯 #DENvsAZ https://t.co/Q3riNmYeVP

They throw to Phillips was 🔥
— Vic Lombardi (@VicLombardi) September 2, 2016
That's a big-time throw…dropping it in between the 2nd and 3rd level…key to the Kubiak passing game…

Wow, #Broncos Paxton Lynch starting the sling it. Love the arm and mobility

Lynch proceeded to drive the Broncos 88 yards down the field, finishing with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Taylor, the duo’s second of the night, to bring Denver within six points of the Cardinals.
Through three quarters, the Broncos first-round selection was sitting with a very respectable stat line of 12-19 passing (63%) for 205 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Whether he’s ready to take over the franchise now or not, it’s clear that he’s shown enough flashes to get the fans excited. Clearly, it’s only a matter of time before Lynch takes the reins and leads this Broncos offense for a long time.
Paxton Lynch is impressive. Rocket arm, accurate when given time to throw, more than enough athleticism for boot-action O. Future is bright.

Paxton Lynch shows flashes of greatness. Best QB on the roster. By far. #WeWantLynch #Broncos
— James Merilatt (@jamesmerilatt) September 2, 2016
At this point in his development, flashes like that from Lynch is all I need.
— Michael Jaycox (@MilkyMike) September 2, 2016
And yet … he’s still a rookie, and rookies are far from perfect.
On Lynch’s very next drive, he threw an ugly pick six — very reminiscent of Trevor Siemian’s earlier this offseason. Does it ruin what was turning out to be a very successful night for the young quarterback? No. But it’s certainly an indication that he could use some more time in the incubator.
Well, that looked eerily familiar
— Michael Jaycox (@MilkyMike) September 2, 2016
Pick six for AZ. Lynch looking for Taylor all the way, and Gabe Martin stepped in front of it for the 30-yard touchdown.
— Andrew Mason (@MaseDenver) September 2, 2016
Based on the way the Broncos have graded QBs in the preseason, that pick-six by Lynch should move him up the depth chart. #Siemian
— James Merilatt (@jamesmerilatt) September 2, 2016
#Broncos Lynch throws a 29-yard pick six to Gabe Martin..He plays like a kid.. Roller coaster ride of highs, lows, But that's not a surprise
— Troy Renck (@TroyRenck) September 2, 2016
Lynch has had a great game up til now, but he never took his eye off his intended receiver – will leave a sour taste in his mouth #broncos
— Mic DePinto (@c_rasta5) September 2, 2016
Now, the question is whether Lynch did enough to warrant the No. 2 job and kick Mark Sanchez out of town?
We’ll find out a week from tonight when the Denver Broncos take on the Carolina Panthers in the first game of the regular season.
