Pro Football Focus (PFF) released their grades for all team performances in Week 1 of the preseason, offering a detailed analysis of individual player contributions. The Denver Broncos saw some strong (and not-so-strong) showings, with linebacker Alex Singleton leading the way.

Singleton was the defensive standout, earning an impressive 89.9 PFF grade – the highest on the team. In 2023, Singleton had the third most tackles of anyone in the league with 177. In his limited 19 snaps on Sunday, the tackling machine added three more and an assist.

Close behind Singleton was linebacker Jonathon Cooper, who garnered an 86.0 grade. Despite playing fewer snaps at 16, Cooper, who’s set to be a starter this season, made his presence felt with a solo tackle, an assist, and a pressure. 

The highest offensive grade went to wide receiver Brandon Johnson. His perfect completion rate on two catches, coupled with 22 yards and 3.5 yards after catch per reception, earned him an 81.4. Johnson, who quietly scored four touchdowns last season, remains in the mix to make the final 53-man roster. Marvin Mims was the second-highest receiver, finishing with an overall score of 73.3.

PFF offered a more tempered assessment of Bo Nix’s Week 1 performance than many in the media, describing his play as “solid, if unspectacular.” He was awarded a 71.4 grade for his efforts. In five drives and 39 snaps, Nix lead the Broncos to two touchdowns and a pair of field goals. A dropped ball from Josh Reynolds halted what would have been an additional 11-yard touchdown. Amongst quarterbacks, Nix was followed by Jarrett Stidham (66.3) and Zach Wilson (56.3)

The publication also highlighted rookie cornerback Kris Abrams-Draine. The first-year player earned an exceptional 90.1 coverage grade from PFF. He made the most of his 19 snaps with a crucial interception on a two-point conversion attempt late in the game.

Javonte Williams led the running backs with a 68.0 grade, while Samaje Perine struggled, earning the lowest mark at 46.5. A costly fumble early in the game significantly impacted Perine’s overall evaluation. Rookie Audric Estimé showcased his potential with 31 rushing yards, including a touchdown, earning a respectable 66.2 grade.

The battle for the starting center position continued as all three candidates saw at least 20 snaps. Alex Forsyth led in snaps with 47 but struggled to impress, earning the lowest grade of 48.3. Veteran Sam Mustipher outperformed his competitors with a grade of 70.8, while Luke Wattenberg finished in the middle with a 51.3.

Overall, the Broncos preseason opener provided a glimpse of potential for the upcoming season. With strong performances from both offense and defense, the team is building momentum as they prepare for the Green Bay Packers this Sunday.
