There was one glaring issue with the Denver Broncos in their preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks on Friday, and, to the delight of Broncos fans everywhere, it wasn’t Brock Osweiler. The backup quarterback played rather well, actually.
No, it was the third phase of the game that struggled for Denver, as it has for some years. The special teams unit allowed a kickoff return for a touchdown, muffed two punts (lost one) and allowed an average of 39 yards on kickoff returns. Seahawks rookie Tyler Lockett was a one-man wrecking ball against the Broncos coverage units, going for 186 yards and a TD on kick returns and 18 yards on his lone punt return.
Danny Williams of Morning Mayhem on Mile High Sports AM 1340 says there’s no chance the Broncos can fix the special teams unit this year, let alone in time for the season. He also says he’s still got a thing for Mona from “Who’s the Boss,” so his co-host, Marcello Romano, says take Williams’ opinion with a grain of salt.
On Monday, Williams and Romano attempted to tackle the topic with more success than the Broncos special teams could tackle Lockett on Friday. Besides their difficulty with coverage and in the return game, Williams says, they still have not resolved their kicking situation either, as the “audition” process is still ongoing.
But Romano and producer Dee White say the Broncos have the right man at the helm to turn around the third phase in short order.
