The Denver Broncos’ offensive line has seen significant growth and improvement since the initial release of Pro Football Focus’ (PFF) NFL offensive line rankings in July. While the team maintained its No. 15 ranking, the current state of the roster suggests a notable enhancement.

Bo Nix’s Emergence

One of the most significant developments is the emergence of rookie quarterback Bo Nix as the starting signal-caller. Nix’s playing style contrasts starkly with his predecessor, Russell Wilson. Unlike Wilson’s tendency to hold onto the ball for extended periods, Nix has demonstrated a quick release and quick decision-making ability. This has eased the pressure on the offensive line. He had an impressive performance in two preseason games, which included six touchdowns in seven possessions, with no sacks or interceptions.

The Broncos’ offensive line has been bolstered by the consistent play of their bookend tackles, Mike McGlinchey and Garett Bolles. McGlinchey, who initially struggled, has shown significant improvement and earned a PFF grade of 39th among offensive tackles. Bolles came in at No. 19 in 2023.

Inside, Quinn Meinerz, who PFF called ‘Denver’s best offensive lineman,’ has continued to impress. For 2023, he earned the third-highest grade among guards. His exceptional performance has earned him a four-year, $80 million extension this offseason, keeping him with the team through 2028.

The departure of Lloyd Cushenberry III to the Tennessee Titans created a void at center. While veteran Sam Mustipher was initially considered a potential replacement, he was released during final roster cuts. Luke Wattenberg and Alex Forsyth remain on the roster. Wattenberg was listed as the No. 1 center on the team’s updated depth chart heading into Week 1.

Sean Payton’s Impact

Head coach Sean Payton’s arrival in Denver has injected new life into the team’s offensive line. Known for his ability to develop top-notch offensive units in New Orleans, Payton’s expertise and emphasis on protection are expected to elevate the Broncos’ line to new heights. His strategic approach and keen eye for talent could significantly improve the team’s performance in the coming seasons.

During his first July press conference, Payton emphasized the importance of the offensive line, stating it’s the ‘most important position group’ and that it ‘permeates your building.'”

In terms of financial commitment, the Broncos have demonstrated their dedication to the offensive line. As of mid-August, the Broncos ranked fifth in average annual value for offensive lineman contracts in 2024 ($76.23 million), but they’re projected to drop to eighth in 2025 ($54.17 million).

Overall, the Denver Broncos’ offensive line is on a positive trajectory. With a promising young quarterback, talented tackles, and a committed coaching staff, the unit is well-positioned for continued improvement and success.
