The Colorado Rapids faced FC Dallas on Friday night in what turned out to be another disappointing draw. In front of the home crowd at Dick Sporting Goods Park, the Rapids failed to capitalize on their chances and in doing so, missed out on three vital points.

Dillon Serna was the Rapids hero on the night, scoring the crucial equalizing goal two minutes from full time. Fabian Castillo opened the scoring for FC Dallas in the 71st minute with a stunning shot, which looked as if would be the winner until late on in the game.

Pablo Mastroeni made several changes from the Rapids’ U.S. Open Cup win over the Colorado Springs Switchbacks last week. Throughout the game, the Rapids couldn’t do enough with the possession advantage (nearly 58%). Additionally, the Rapids only put 3 shots on target from 14 total shots.

Lack of scoring continues to be a problem for Colorado. After the game, Mastroeni spoke to coloradorapids.com about the Rapids inability to score first in games saying, “Scoring is the hardest thing to do in a game. What I reiterated to the guys is that our corner kicks are a fantastic opportunity to score. We had eight corner kicks tonight; we’ve got to do better on those. It’s about being brave, and being willing to stick your head in places where it could get ripped off. At the moment we don’t have enough of that. The first half can be hard fought, but it’s the second half where I feel like we can get on top of teams here. For the most part of the second half I think we did. It was one moment, one breakdown. I think we can do better with that play all around”.

As a player, Mastroeni was a “take no prisoners” type of player. Perhaps this attitude is what is missing in the Rapids at the moment, especially in front of goal. Fans of the burgundy and white will be imploring the Rapids to show more and more fight as the season continues.

With Fridays result finalized, the Rapids are now 2-4-9 with 15 points. This leaves them in last place in the Western Conference 5 points off the Houston Dynamo who sit above them.

The Rapids now have two road games in quick succession with the first game on Wednesday against Orlando SC and then against Sporting KC on Saturday.  With every game gaining in importance, the Rapids need to start finding the back of the net quickly.
