Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Zac MacMath has been named one of five nominees for Major League Soccer’s Player of the Month for May. He joins the Red Bulls’ Sacha Kljestan and Bradley Wright-Phillips, Montreal’s Ignacio Piatti, and NYCFC’s David Villa.
The Rapids have had quite the start to 2016, with a 6-0-1 slate at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, and much of this success can be contributed to MacMath.
In May, MacMath surrenered just two goals in five starts while posting a league-high 86.67 save percentage for the Western Conference’s top club. For the year, he has a .71 goals against average, second only to Chicago’s Sean Johnson. MacMath also is tied with Toronto’s Clint Irwin with five shutouts, but owns the better save percentage at 70.2.
As a team, the Rapids have conceded just ten goals in their 14 matches, and MacMath has been in net for all of them.
MacMath began his MLS career with the Philadelphia Union after being drafted fifth overall in the 2011 SuperDraft, but came over to Colorado at the start of the 2015 season and has quickly assumed his role as the captain of the defense. The Rapids will take a hiatus from MLS until June 18 when they host the Chicago Fire.
