Training camp in the NFL is a time for coaches to get their first real look at the roster, and for rookies to finally get a taste of the next level of football. For late-round picks like rookie running back De’Angelo Henderson, who was drafted in the sixth round out of Coastal Carolina, it’s a chance to show that he belongs in the league.
Henderson spoke with the media after the first day of camp and showed some confidence after his first NFL practice.
“I feel that I did pretty well. Day 1 in helmets, running around and getting the blood flowing. [Let’s] see what happens when we get going the next days,” Henderson said.
Though he felt good, Henderson was clear with the media that he knew there were areas to improve in during the next few weeks.
“I definitely have to stay patient. I know I’m pretty fast so getting the ball I have to stay patient on it and meet my reads and marques … I feel like for the most part I have everything I need to have for right now,” the rookie explained. “Of course as we go along I’ll learn more but for right now I’m pretty confident in myself.”
Henderson also spoke about the new experience and what it was like to be a part of the biggest show in town.
“I never had fans at practice before so that’s pretty cool to have them out here. I’m never nervous. [Assistant Head Coach/Running Backs] Coach ‘E’ [Eric Studesville] does a good job at preparing all of us, so I’m not nervous,” Henderson told the media.
Henderson has already turned some heads with his performance in the first few days of camp. All-pro defensive back Chris Harris mentioned to media members that Henderson has been particularly impressive through two days.
Broncos camp continues for the next few weeks and Henderson will have plenty of opportunities to prove himself worthy of NFL playing time, especially with the injury to Devontae Booker.
