The Denver Nuggets had interest in Los Angeles Clippers star Blake Griffin at last year’s trade deadline. And while no deal was completed, many expected the Nuggets to at least attempt a pursuit of the All-Star power forward next offseason.
Griffin, though, doesn’t look to be going anywhere.
Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders reported that Griffin intends to re-sign with the Clippers after the season, putting any hopes of him coming to the Mile High City on hold.
The report also states that head coach Doc Rivers believes Blake will retire as a member of the Clippers, saying he is “not open to” moving on from the city of Angels.
Griffin’s versatility is extremely valuable to the Clippers. With is ability to bring the ball up the court, finish with his back to the basket and distribute from post makes him one of the game’s most unique players.
That said, while the Nuggets would love to acquire someone of Griffin’s talent, they don’t necessarily need another big man on the roster.
The Nuggs are deep at the forward and center positions with Nikola Jokic, Jusuf Nurkic, Kenneth Faried and Darrell Aurthur expected to soak up most of the minutes at the four and the five.
It’s always possible, but it is unlikely that Griffin will ever put on the baby blue and gold during his career.
