The offseason drama continues for the Denver Broncos, as Von Miller and inside linebacker Brandon Marshall may not attend offseason workouts, which start on April 18.
During a league meeting last week, Kubiak expressed his uncertainty as to whether Miller would be at offseason workouts.
“I sure hope so,” Kubiak said, via ESPN. “Obviously I expect everybody there. We’ll see, but Von’s always been a worker, he’s always taken care of his business.”
And today, Jeff Legwold reported that Marshall has told teammates that he will skip OTAs if he and the Broncos can’t agree on a long-term deal.
With the departure of fellow linebacker Danny Trevathan, it may be that Marshall hopes to use offseason workouts as leverage for a better contract. Though Trevathan lead the Broncos with 109 tackles, Marshall wasn’t too far behind, with 101 tackles. The next closest player on the team, in terms of tackles, was T.J. Ward, who had 61.
Trevathan left for a four-year, $24.5 million contract with the Chicago Bears, and Marshall is probably hoping for something similar. With the Broncos’ cap situation, though, it’s hard to imagine that he’ll get any more than the $2.553 million he’s guaranteed with the second-round tender.
The cards are entirely in the Broncos hands. Unless another team is willing to give up a second-round pick for Marshall — which they won’t — the Broncos have all the leverage. Either he signs his tender or he doesn’t play.
Still, the Broncos need Marshall, and they’d rather have him at OTAs and training camp than not.
“The nucleus of our team — there are a lot of guys coming back that were very successful and played extremely well,” Kubiak said. “We’ve got to show them, along with the guys we’re bringing in, that we’re going to continue to help them get better and give them a chance to go back out this year and put themselves in position again.”
Luckily, if the Broncos really want to get something done quick, Marshall has already given them a path to doing so.
Id go sign my Tender contract right now if someone in Denver drove thru the storm, got me some snooze pancakes and brought it to my doorstep
