The Denver Broncos have already signed two offensive tackles this offseason in Donald Stephenson and Russell Okung, but it looks as if they may not be done yet.
According to Tom Rock of Newsday, the Denver Broncos attempted to reach out to Giants free agent tackle Will Beatty for a workout earlier in the offseason, but Beatty declined, citing injury.
“I want to make sure I can perform and show who I really am,” Beatty said, via Newsday. “I don’t want to show them an injured Will. I don’t want to visit a team and say ‘It’ll get better.’ I want to be good and ready to go. I want to say ‘I’m ready and I can be your guy.’”
After starting 47 of 48 games for the Giants from 2012 to 2014, Beatty missed the entire 2015 campaign with a torn pectoral muscle. He was originally put on the PUP list, but after suffering a rotator cuff injury to his other arm during the season, he was put on season-ending injured reserve.
Following the season, the Giants made quick work of releasing Beatty, but he’s taken his time in finding a new home. The question, though, will be whether he waited too long.
Beatty was cleared by doctors on Monday, and he’ll look to begin his free agency process this week, but many of his suitors, including the Broncos and Raiders, have moved on. With Stephenson and Okung already in the building, the Broncos don’t seem to have a need for another starting tackle — remember, Ryan Clady and Ty Sambraillo are still in the locker room, too.
Nonetheless, Beatty feels he’ll be an asset to whichever team brings him in.
“I’m going to be great this season,” he said. “I’m ready to go. This will be a new start for me, a new chance for me. I don’t want to miss any of it.”
