There is a chance the midsummer classic will make its return to the Mile High City in 2022.
According to Mike Klis of 9news, officials from Major League Baseball visited Denver on Monday to inspect the city as the Colorado Rockies continue to bid to host the 2022 All-Star Game. Monday’s visit was not the first from MLB representatives, although it could have been the most thorough, per the report.
The Rockies initially submitted paperwork for Denver to be considered as a host city back in 2019.
The Rockies and City of Denver have proposed the Convention Center and Civic Center Park as two potential locations to host fan-related activities. McGregor Square, located across the street from Coors Field at 20th and Wazee, is also in consideration to host events and is expected to open sometime in 2021.
The Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs are considered the Rockies “chief competitors” to host the All-Star game in 2022, per 9news. Additionally, there is a slew of other clubs that have shown interest in hosting the spectacle.
The Rangers will play their first season in New Globe Life Park this year and will have a strong case for their bid because of it. Since 2010, three new ballparks have been built (not including New Globe Life Park), and each team with a new park has hosted an All-Star game within five years of its opening.
The Rockies have not hosted an All-Star game since 1998. Today, Coors Field is the third-oldest ballpark in the National League but is still widely regarded as one of the best all-around ballparks in the country.
The City of Denver has also made a bid to be a host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
