Carlos Gonzalez is one of the greatest Colorado Rockies in franchise history, and they’d like to keep it that way.
According to Les Shapiro of Afternoon Drive on Mile High Sports Radio, the Colorado Rockies have already begun talking to CarGo about an extension.
“I’ve confirmed with two very reliable sources that the Rockies would like to sign Carlos Gonzalez to a contract extension, and they’ve already broached the subject with them,” Shapiro said on Wednesday afternoon.
CarGo’s seven-year, $80 million deal will come to a close following the 2017 season, but if the two sides are going to come to an extension, it’s going to have to be a long-term one, according to Shapiro.
“CarGo has told people close to him that if he signs an extension, he would like it to be a long-term deal, and he would like to retire a Rockie,” Shapiro said.
“I’m told by people close to the situation that CarGo would not be interested in signing, say, a two-year extension, even if it’s for somewhere around $25 million a year, which would be the going rate for someone of his caliber,” Shapiro continued. “The reason for that is by the time that deal would be done, a short extension, he would be 32 or 33 years old and the likelihood of anyone signing him to a five- or six-year deal then would be slim.”
